New research reveals the world’s most expensive cities to buy a pint

WE all know Australians love to drink — but the average cost of a cold one has risen far higher than you realise.

SYDNEY is among the most expensive cities in the world to buy a pint, new research has found.

Comparison site finder.com.au recently crunched the numbers to find the average cost of a beer in 177 cities around the world.

Sydney took out the 27th spot, with the average price ringing in at $7.87.

Meanwhile, over in Dubai, which came in first place, you’ll have to fork out a staggering $15.10 for a cold one — almost double what Sydneysiders are forced to pay.

And spare a thought for our friends across the ditch, with Auckland dwellers being stung $8.13 for their beer.

Doha in Qatar came in second with $14.96 beers, followed by Icelandic capital Reykjavik, where locals shell out $14.01 on average.

The price of a pint of beer broke the $10 barrier in 10 cities, with Oslo, Mariehamn, Manama, Singapore, Muscat, Noumea and Zurich rounding out the top 10.

But luckily, there are also plenty of options on the opposite end of the scale, with 116 cities where you can still buy a beer for under $5.

Beers are cheapest in Caracas, Venezuela at $0.92, followed by Tashkent, Uzbekistan in a close place, with beer setting you back just $1.04.

Finder.com.au’s money expert Bessie Hassan said despite the high cost of beer in Australia, we still manage to down about 1.7 billion litres of the stuff every year — about the equivalent of 670 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

“Shouting a round has become a very expensive gesture,” she said.

“While Aussie eyes might light up at that thought of a $2 beer, those days are long gone Down Under.

“If you’re planning a trip to Ho Chi Minh City or Budapest you’re in luck — those cities have some of the cheapest prices for beer around the world.”

But Ms Hassan warned the rising price of a cheeky beer could potentially affect our culture in future.

“If prices continue to go up in Australia it could start to have effect on our drinking culture, with more people choosing to drink at home rather than going to the pub,” she said.

“Drinking less is probably healthier on the hip pocket and your long term health.”

Last year, Deutsche Bank data backed up the latest research after finding Australia was one of the most expensive places in the world to buy alcohol, according to the May 2017 Expatistan Cost of Living Index.

It found the average cost of beer to vary between $8 and $9 in our two biggest cities, while a bottle of wine costs $20 on average in Sydney and standard cocktails ranging between $17-18 in both Sydney and Melbourne.

And a Bloomberg study released in April this year found Australia to be among the top three most three expensive places to buy alcohol, cigarettes and drugs.
