Kmart has made a major call about the future of one of its iconic stores and shoppers have been left less than impressed by the decision.

Kmart shoppers in Adelaide are in absolute tizzy because the retailer is shutting down its Port Adelaide store in South Australia.

A Kmart spokesman confirmed to the Daily Mail the store is closing but promised it will “continue to support the local community” from other iconic Kmart stores in Adelaide like Churchhill Road and West Lakes and of course, there’s always online.

News.com.au has contacted Kmart for comment.

Upset customers took to social media to share their horror that the Port Adelaide store was closing its doors.

It is particularly sour news because the store has the traditional Kmart layout. So the registers are at the entrance of the store and not smack bang in the middle.

The fact the store never got an upgrade with the new layout might have been a sign of things too come.

“What! It was the best one,” someone commented on a Reddit thread discussing the matter.

“Odd choice to close that one,” someone quipped

Another savvy shopper claimed this could be a good chance for one of Kmart’s rivals to get a prime retail location.

“I could see Big W snapping up that location,” someone wrote.

Naturally that claim kicked off a debate, as someone else said they envisioned a Target filling the store’s shoes.

One Aussie was quick to point out that the one thing Australia needs is more budget-friendly retail stores.

“Pure greed! We need more Kmart’s not less,” they advocated.

At this point it is unclear who they are calling greedy, but someone in Adelaide is being greedy and you read it here first.

Another pointed out that Port Adelaide Kmart was one of their favourites because you could always find what you were looking for.

“This Kmart usually has better stock levels than other stores in some department,” someone wrote.

Another shopper claimed that extra stock might have been a bad sign.

“Maybe that’s why! Ha-ha no one’s shopping there,” they joked.

Things got real when an anonymous person claiming to be a Kmart worker shed some light on the situation.

“I work at Kmart and I got the call two days ago before they announced it saying that the store is closing in three months and that they’re looking to move people to different stores.”

Thankfully it doesn’t seem like they’ll be out of a job but the Kmart worker expressed their sadness that the iconic store was closing.

“I was shocked especially because that Kmart has been there before I was born, and I have so many memories there. Honestly, I thought I was going to be fired definitely didn’t expect the outcome we got,” they shared.

If you want to upset Aussies all you have to do is close down a Kmart store.
