Kmart is introducing “low sensory” shopping at select stores for shoppers who find the usual hustle and bustle stressful, including people on the autism spectrum.

The “Quiet Space” program every Wednesday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm will involve changes to the in-store environment, including dimmed lighting, quieter music, register and scanner volumes, and limited trolley collections.

No PA announcements will be made unless there is an emergency, and more team members will be available to support customers.

“We understand retail stores are high-sensory environments and we hope the introduction of ‘Quiet Space’ will giver some of our Kmart customers and communities time and space to calm their sensory systems,” the Wesfarmers-owned chain said on Monday.

Kmart said the aim of the program, which begins this week, was to create an accessible, inclusive and welcoming environment for all shoppers.

While layouts may vary store to store, Kmart has created sensory maps that are available online to help customers plan their trip.

The programs have been developed with help from disability advocacy organisations around Australia and New Zealand.

Quiet Space will be offered at these stores:

• South Australia – Churchill, Mt Barker

• Western Australia – Bunbury, Midland, Innaloo, Rockingham

• New South Wales / ACT – Gungahlin, North Rocks, Pagewood, Minto

• Victoria – Templestowe, Wangaratta, Sanctuary Lakes, Leopold

• Queensland – Toowong, Victoria Point, Stafford, Oxenford, Morayfield, Arana Hills
