SWEDISH retail giant Ikea has recalled a bat cape costume sold in Australia amid fears it could strangle children.

The company recalled the Lattjo cape after it received reports that it had marked and scratched the necks of at least three children in the UK, The Guardian reported.

The children did not need medical treatment, but the costume recall is a precautionary step for the company, citing “the risk of strangulation or injuries to the neck”.

The costume has been sold worldwide, except for in Russia and Indonesia, since November, 2015.

Ikea is urging anyone who has bought the cape to stop children playing with it, and to return it to any store for a full refund.

Ikea said in a statement that the cape had “got stuck and didn’t detach easily enough from the children’s necks”.

Ikea previously recalled ceiling lights in February after they received 224 reports worldwide, including 11 injuries.
