Here are Amazon Australia’s Black Friday deals

Amazon is marking its first Black Friday since launching in Australia with a huge list of deals — but will it be enough?

The Amazon reviews you can't help but laugh at

Amazon is marking its first Black Friday shopping event since launching in Australia with “tens of thousands” of products heavily discounted.

The e-commerce giant was widely expected to open in time for last year’s post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy but missed the mark, eventually launching in December to a muted response.

“We are delighted to bring our first ever Black Friday deals event to Australian customers with tens of thousands of products available at discounted prices,” Amazon Australia country manager Rocco Braeuniger said in a statement.

“With deals on everything from active wear brands such as Lorna Jane and Puma, to everyday essentials such as Nivea and big brand skin care products, to consoles such as PS4, Nintendo and Xbox, we hope there is something for everyone.”

Queensland University of Technology marketing professor Gary Mortimer said he didn’t think this year’s Black Friday would provide a huge boost to Amazon’s fortunes Down Under. “Since they’ve opened here in Australia it’s had very little impact directly to the market,” he said.

“In saying that this is a long game they’re playing here. Progressively this year we’ve seen them add new categories, recently toys, pets, automotive and grocery. But as it stands eBay is still the most popular site, followed by Gumtree with Amazon in third place.”

Amazon customers can use the app to “watch” current and upcoming deals, of which there are a few different kinds. “Lightning deals” are limited promotions while stocks last and are limited to one purchase per customer.

“Deals of the day” last for 24-hours or until stocks last and feature discounts on popular items. Customers can also access US deals of the day through the local website, with free shipping for members of Amazon’s $7-a-month Prime subscription service.

If a deal sells out there’s an option to join a waitlist to be notified when more stock is released. Some deals are exclusive to Prime members, who can also get access to some lightning deals 30 minutes ahead of time.

Amazon says since launching last year it has grown its selection on Amazon.com.au fourfold to more than 80 million products across 27 categories.

On Thursday, the online retailer backflipped on a controversial decision earlier this year to stop shipping to Australia from its international stores, made in response to the government’s online GST changes.

Dr Mortimer said Black Friday was still “evolving” in Australia. “Shoppers in the US last year spent about $19 billion over that four-day period, those numbers are nowhere near that here in Australia,” he said.

“Kogan last year reported a sales tick of about $4 million. What we’re seeing here in Australia is certainly more physical retailers jumping on the bandwagon, particularly consumer electronics retailers like JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman.”
