A US police officer had a lucky escape last week after he happened to open his takeaway coffee – and spotted “a large, thick piece of mucus” floating inside.

The unnamed Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper bought a large cup of black coffee from a Dunkin’ Donuts store in Chicago on Thursday night and happened to remove the lid to allow the drink to cool down as it was “extremely hot”.

That’s when he saw the mucus, which Illinois State Police said in a press release had later been confirmed to be saliva.

Dunkin’ Donuts employee Vincent J Sessler, 25, was later arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, reckless conduct, and battery to a peace officer.

The company also later confirmed Mr Sessler no longer worked at the popular doughnut company.

“Dunkin’ has a deep appreciation for police officers who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe, and the franchise owner has reached out directly to the officer to apologise for the experience,” the company said in a statement provided to NBC News.

In another statement issued to WMAQ-TV, the company said Mr Sessler’s actions were “inconsistent with the brand’s values”.

“The franchise owner, who independently owns and operates this restaurant, informs us that he took immediate action to investigate the matter and terminated the individual responsible for this reprehensible behaviour,” that statement reads.

Illinois State Police director Brendan F Kelly also issued a statement condemning Mr Sessler’s actions.

“This is outrageous and disgusting. The men and women of the Illinois State Police put their heart and soul into protecting the lives and rights of all people in this state every day,” Mr Kelly said.

“They deserve better than this insulting and dangerous treatment.

“For their safety, ISP officers and employees will be prohibited from patronising this location.”

Mr Sessler remained in custody at the Chicago Police Department 8th District as of Saturday.

The disturbing act comes after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked the Black Lives Matter movement across the US and the globe, which put the spotlight on racial inequality and acts of police brutality.
