Everyday shop products that will change following the death of the Queen

A surprising range of shopping products will now have to change following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

There ‘probably will never be another monarch’ like Queen Elizabeth II

Hundreds of popular everyday products found in supermarkets and other stores will soon be forced to make a big change following the death of the Queen.

Products with the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom printed on their label will have to remove it and reapply to get permission from King Charles III to use it.

According to the Royal Warrant Holders Association, a royal warrant of appointment is a document that appoints a company or individual trader to the royal household, which allows them to use the royal arms for their business.

To qualify, they must regularly supply products or services for at least five of the previous seven years.

A royal warrant is usually granted for up to five years and reviewed in the year before it is due to expire.

But when a grantor dies, the warrant will become void and the company or individual will have two years to discontinue the use of the royal arms.

There are currently about 875 royal warrants held by about 800 companies or individuals.

The Queen had been responsible for granting 620 warrants, including Moët & Chandon champagne, Johnnie Walker whisky and Twinings tea.

The Duke of Edinburgh granted 34 warrants, while the Prince of Wales granted 182.

There are other things that are also changing following Her Majesty’s death.

PASSPORTS

Australian passports refer to “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second” on the first page inside the booklet.

Passports will eventually have to be changed following the accession of King Charles III.

It comes as many people have only just renewed their passports, or received their first, to start travelling again after the Covid-19 pandemic.

But the Prime Minister’s office says the death of Queen Elizabeth II does not impact the validity of current Australian passports.

MONEY

Coins and banknotes with the Queen’s effigy will remain acceptable but the Royal Australian Mint expects King Charles III to be on new Australian coins from next year.

He will face left, in line with tradition that says the direction of the effigy changes with each new monarch.

The Reserve Bank of Australia says there will be “no immediate change” to $5 notes.

COURT

Barristers appointed as Queen’s Counsel will now have the title of King’s Counsel, with the transition made automatically.

Court cases will be brought forward in the name of his majesty, rather than her majesty, and the “R” royal cipher used in court citations will refer to Rex rather than Regina.
