DOUGIE the pizza boy is looking incredibly archaic right now, with Domino’s launching a world first that is set to shake up the delivery game.

A ROBOT could soon be delivering your pizza to your door

Domino’s Pizza has launched world-first technology to shake up the pizza game. It plans to deploy a fleet of delivery robots starting in Queensland, with off-road trials in suburban areas kicking off in Brisbane from today.

Instead of a pizza delivery boy, customers may soon be greeted by a DRU or Domino’s Robotic Unit that can travel off road, on bike paths, roads and footpaths at roughly 18km/h.

Following the top secret announcement on Thursday night, Dominos will now kick off a six month trial delivering pizza hot from the robotic oven where customer input a code from their mobile app to access their delivery.

“Sure there will be some who point to the novelty factor but that will wear off and we’re only interested in products that will last forever,” chief executive Don Meij said.

“Artificial intelligence will be very real for Domino’s very soon.”

But before robots can start zooming around the suburbs Mr Meij said the group will need to work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to get approvals to navigate pedestrians and bikes.

It may not come as good news to Domino’s 3000 newly-employed delivery drivers but Mr Meij said the technology was a big coup for Queensland and would create several jobs in the future.

“We’d rather be a nation that hosts technology rather than imports it,” he said.

“Not all deliveries will be able to be made by DRU. There will be some only delivery drivers will be able to do.”

If any drunk or opportunistic thieves have a mind to steal Domino’s robots Mr Meij said 120kgs of camera and GPS technology would immediately give them away.

It’s not known how much Domino’s has spent developing the technology or how much each unit will cost.

The technology was developed by Sydney-based start-up Marathon Robotics in Domino’s newly built Brisbane-based innovation hub D Lab.
