On Sunday, a consumer asked the company on Facebook if their home brand milk was made from reconstituted milk powder.

Coles replied, confirming that “Coles Brand Fresh milk is made from reconstituted milk powder” – a post that remained on the supermarket’s Facebook page for several hours.

This original reply to a comment was subsequently deleted.

The supermarket later deleted the comment and said it was a typo and that Coles brand milk was fresh and “not made from reconstituted milk powder”.

MILK WARS: Woolworths, Coles face social media backlash

Despite Coles deleting the incorrect post and issuing a retraction, the original statement was circulated on social media, prompting outrage from consumers.

The incident comes as both Coles and Woolworths have denied allegations staff were ordered to stop restocking branded milk to push home-brand options.

“We are stocking proprietary and own brand milk in the same way this week as we have done in previous weeks,” Woolworths said in a statement to The Courier Mail.

“Coles has not made any changes to the way we replenish our milk range,” a Coles spokesperson said.

Coles confirmed to The Courier-Mail the original post was a typo and that its milk is 100 per cent fresh milk.
