Coles launches ‘Best Buys’ website to take on Aldi and Woolworths

A big battle is looming between the supermarket giants as they jostle for customers in the special buys space, with Coles the latest to launch.

Coles launches new online marketplace

Coles has launched a new online platform which will offer a range of Best Buys that won’t be available on supermarket shelves in a move set to rival Aldi’s popular special buys, as well as Woolworths recent foray into the space.

The new website will feature everything from popular gadgets to homewares and large big-ticket appliances with free home delivery offered to most postcodes.

From Tuesday, its Best Buys website will offer products such a refurbished Apple iPad 6 for $259, a mosaic table set for $149 and a set of three round rattan side tables for $149.

There will also be a giant at home greenhouse designed to provide plants, fruit and vegetables for $699, a cooking pack oven and cooktop for $599 and a 20-piece frame set for $69 to kick off the launch.

People could also deck out their houses with an Urban Frameless Oval Vanity Mirror for $49.99 or a Keter Boston Cabinet for $229.

The supermarket giant will add new products to the online collection each Friday.

Coles general manager for health and home Jonathan Torr said the new website will sell lifestyle products and also provides a platform for emerging brands to showcase their limited edition products to a large national customer base.

“Free delivery is included across the entire range which is something we’re really proud to offer our customers, by working closely with our brand partners to get products directly into their homes sooner, at the best price possible,” he said.

“While we want to keep the collection small to ensure we’re offering a good mix of sought-after products, we’re looking forward to expanding our existing brand partners’ range as well as working with new suppliers to continue evolving the Best Buys offer and exciting our customers with a variety of interesting products they cannot get in store.”

In September, Woolworths launched Everyday Market, an online marketplace which includes items in categories including household, health and beauty, pet care, baby and toys.

It was designed to allow shoppers to browse for extra products while completing their regular grocery shopping online. Items included on the platform cover a range of household name brands, such as Russell Hobbs, Nutribullet, Dyson, Barbie, Fisher-Price and Vetalogica.

Aldi hinted it would move into online sales back in March with the frenzy inducing Special Buys and alcohol the first to become available in the future.

Tom Daunt, Aldi CEO, said groceries could be added at a later date but e-commerce was set to be part of the supermarket’s future as the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated Aussie’s online shopping habits.
