Coronavirus: Coles and Woolworths tighten social distancing rules

Coles has just dropped 100 new ready-to-eat meals – with a price tag of less than $10 a pop.

It’s part of the supermarket giant’s biggest-ever range of homestyle convenience meals, including under its new brand, Coles Kitchen.

The new line of ready-to-eat meals feature cuisines from across the globe including Italian, Indian, Asian and Australian.

Some of the specific dishes now available include Slow-cooked Beef Brisket Bourguignon, Slow-cooked Greek Inspired Pork, Chicken Tikka Masala with Rice and Roasted Cauliflower Chana Masala.

And it’s good news for those on a budget, with sides starting at just $2.3 each, soups from $3, meals from $6.50 and dishes designed for couples starting at $10.

They’ve hit shelves after research found one in three customers didn’t have enough time in their busy lives to cook a meal from scratch, with 52 per cent not keen on cooking more at home.

It revealed chopping and cutting were the biggest meal prep turn offs.

Charlotte Rhodes, Coles General Manager for Fresh Convenience, Dairy and Freezer, said the expanded range was designed to help out time-poor shoppers.

“Our customers have told us they’re looking for quick and easy meals for lunch and dinner that are made from quality ingredients,” Ms Rhodes said.

“And since COVID-19, we have seen a growing demand for Australian restaurant-quality food that won’t break the bank and provides healthier alternatives to fast food.”

Coles General Manager of Own Brand Brad Cook said the team had “trialled, tweaked and tasted every meal” to ensure it tastes great and was nutritious to boot.

“The majority of the meals have a three or four health star rating, the soups have up to three serves of veg and unnecessary salt has been removed from the Coles Kitchen range to help support a healthier, balanced diet,” he said.

On top of the new range, more than 220 Coles supermarkets will include Food to Go convenience departments by November.

The 100 new convenience products launching in stores last week include 55 Coles branded products including 34 new Coles Kitchen ready to heat meals, 12 Coles Finest premium quality meals, new Nature’s Kitchen plant-based options, in addition to new meals, soups and sauces from popular brands Pitango, Latina Fresh and YouFoodz.

From 22 June, Coles will also launch a hot roast beef) and a Mexican-style RSPCA-approved hot roast chicken to the list.
