Former porn star Mia Khalifa trolled over controversial gun control stance
LIKE many Americans, Mia Khalifa is sick of hearing about slaughtered schoolkids. So she decided to do something about it.
WITH one tweet, former porn star Mia Khalifa has reinvigorated the gun control debate in the US.
As the country reeled from yet another senseless school massacre — this time, the Santa Fe High School shooting in Texas on May 18 which killed 10 — Khalifa publicly vowed to give up her own weapon to make a powerful statement about America’s woeful gun violence track record.
She made her pledge on Twitter on May 20, immediately sparking thousands of likes, comments and retweets.
• Doctor’s excuse for decapitating baby
• Pie Face owner loses everything
• Paper’s ‘sickening’ front page
“I’m turning in my gun to the police today and leaving my gun rack empty, just like the beds of all the lost children,” Khalifa’s tweet read.
“I’m not against the 2nd amendment, I am against the untimely deaths of children.”
She later followed it up with a photo of herself shaking hands with a police officer after surrendering her weapon.
She also donated the value of the gun — $1985 — to gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.
Khalifa’s bold statement was welcomed by many fans and followers, who praised her for setting a good example and trying to spark change.
This. All of this. A lady of great influence doing what's right and setting an example in hopes of making change. Good for you @miakhalifa

Kudos to you Mia. Glad to read that it's not about guns or Amendments to you. It's about something bigger than that.

This is the sexiest thing you've ever done.

But in a country bitterly divided by the gun control debate, Khalifa’s controversial stance has seen her targeted by gun enthusiasts who brutally mocked her decision on social media.
Some accused Khalifa of pulling a publicity stunt, while others said publicly declaring she had removed weapons from her home could see her attacked by criminals in future.
And others argued that unless she had planned on shooting children, giving up her gun would do nothing to make America safer.
Relinquish at your peril...now only police & criminals will have guns ...does that make you SAFE ?????????????? NO !!!

No if thatâs what you believed you would have done it privately not turned into a spectacle by posting media, this is just an attention grab to stay popular

Why would you shoot children? And if your not going to shoot children... what does your gun have to do with anything?

But Khalifa has stuck to her cause, urging the public to “Do anything, just #DoSomething” to support the gun control movement on Twitter.
She explained that while turning in her own gun wouldn’t change anything, it was a “symbolic” gesture.
“If all of us were to #DoSomething small, eventually it will add up and change the world,” she tweeted.
The Santa Fe massacre marked the 101st mass shooting in the US this year alone, according to the non-profit Gun Violence Archive.
And according to CNN, of those shootings, 22 have been attacks in schools that resulted in victims being hurt or killed in 2018 — equating to more than one school shooting per week.
According to the Washington Post, more people have died in school shootings than in the military in the US this year.
