BHP to cut 90 jobs from WA mining business Nickel West
MINING giant BHP Billiton will cut 90 jobs from its Nickel West business in WA, after being unable to find a buyer for the business.
MINING giant BHP Billiton will cut 90 jobs from its Nickel West business in Western Australia.
The company this week scrapped the sale of its West Australian nickel business after failing to attract a buyer.
While Nickel West’s Perseverance mine at Leinster continues to be under maintenance, BHP will discontinue its Venus project near Leinster in the Goldfields region of WA.
“Across the BHP Billiton portfolio there remains intense internal competition for capital, as a result a decision has been made to discontinue development of the Venus project,” a BHP Billiton spokeswoman said.
The Nickel West business includes three mines and associated concentrators, the Kalgoorlie smelter, and the Kwinana refinery.
BHP has not revealed if it would include Nickel West in its NewCo spin-off of smaller assets due to occur in 2015, which would be the most likely fit.
