ABOUT 140 jobs in South Australia are being cut by BHP Billiton.
Most of the jobs will go from BHP’s Adelaide operations which support the Olympic Dam copper mine at Roxby Downs.
A BHP spokeswoman said as many workers as possible would be redeployed elsewhere in BHP when their roles were cut.
In another major development, the grinding mill at Olympic Dam which had broken down has been restored ahead of schedule.
An electrical fault shut down the Svedala mill, which breaks down the hard rock, in January.
It had been expected it would take until September to fix but the mill resumed operation on Friday and the production line will crank back up to full capacity by the end of July, BHP said.
The State Budget last week estimated the stoppage would reduce BHP’s revenue by $300 million with 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes less in annual copper production.
