Shocking moment SBS interview is interrupted by racist heckler
This is the shocking moment an Aussie interrupted an interview with a man from South Sudan who is struggling to find employment.
An SBS Examines interview with security guard Bol Kuol was abruptly interrupted by a racist heckler in St Mary’s, a suburb of Western Sydney known for its multicultural community.
The episode focused on the unemployment rate for the Dinka community in Australia and the struggles some migrants face in getting a job.
Dinka-speaking migrants from South Sudan have a 7.8 per cent rate of unemployment, almost double the national 4.2 per cent rate.
SBS spoke to two men who both graduated from Australian universities but still need jobs in their fields years after graduating.
Mr Kuol said he had applied for 73 jobs and not received an offer for a single interview.
Unfortunately, when Mr Kuol was speaking about belonging, an angry voice out of frame sparked up off-camera.
“We’re not going to stop talking when you’re talking that shit, man,” the unidentified man said.
Bol became visibly disheartened and distressed.
“We were here before all of that. Why don’t you ask him what he gets when he comes to Australia?” the passerby continued
“A f***ing house, car, money, job.
“They’re taking everything from us, and you’re worried about their black arses?”
Social media commenters described the man’s comments as “disgraceful” and called for the broadcaster to reveal his identity.
“Disgraceful. Makes me ashamed to be Australian. So sorry you experience this racism Bol. We need to do and be better,” one person wrote on social media under the video.
“More people need to see this. It was the Arabs in the 00, the Asians in the 90s, and the Europeans in the 70s and 80s. The target changes but the hate is the same,” another wrote.
“Not surprising unfortunately. Poor man didn’t deserve that barrage of ignorance and hate! Wishing him well now and for his future,” another commented.
