Sarah Greenhalgh takes over as 7News Brisbane co-anchor after Sharyn Ghidella’s shock exit
Channel 7 has appointed a new co-anchor months after the abrupt sacking of Sharyn Ghidella who worked for the network for 17 years.
Award-winning journalist Sarah Greenhalgh is set to take over as co-anchor of 7News Brisbane’s 6.00pm bulletin.
The move comes following Sharyn Ghidella’s sudden and unexpected departure in July — a move that left many viewers reeling.
Greenhalgh’s appointment has been met with both intrigue and anticipation, the Courier Mail reports.
The Brisbane native will join experienced broadcaster Max Futcher at the newsdesk from Monday, October 21.
Her appointment comes after months of speculation following Ghidella’s abrupt sacking — a decision that sent shockwaves through the local media landscape after Ghidella’s 17-year stint as a cornerstone of Brisbane’s evening news.
Returning to her roots at the Mount Coot-Tha studios, Greenhalgh brings with her a decade of experience, having reported from over 20 countries.
Her recent work as a foreign correspondent saw her on the ground during some of the world’s most harrowing events, including the war in Ukraine and the Turkey-Syria earthquakes.
“Coming home to my original 7News family is a huge thrill,” Greenhalgh said.
For Futcher, with over 30 years of experience in the industry, the change marks yet another shift in a newsroom that’s seen its share of turbulence.
“I can’t wait for our viewers to get to know Sarah too,” he said.
Greenhalgh’s return comes amid a number of shake-ups for 7News Brisbane.
Katrina Blowers has recently been promoted to Queensland Chief Reporter, while Erin Edwards, formerly 10 News First Queensland, is set to rejoin Seven as News Director for Brisbane and the Gold Coast in 2025.
Rumours swirled in September when Greenhalgh was spotted at Seven’s Mount Coot-Tha studios, sparking questions about her future with the network.
