NY Post front page brutally trolls Donald Trump’s presidential announcement

A major newspaper has trolled Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential announcement in the most brutal way possible.

Reaction to Donald Trump’s announcement of a third White House bid on Tuesday unsurprisingly ranged from gushing to outraged.

But by far the most brutal response came courtesy of the New York Post – which barely considered it worthy of mention.

The top story across the front page of the newspaper’s Wednesday print edition was dedicated to a major crackdown on the city’s out-of-control gang violence.

A yellow strap along the bottom of the front page read dismissively, “Florida man makes announcement.”

The brief story, buried all the way back on page 26, was even more savage.

“Been there, Don that,” the headline read.

“With just 720 days to go before the next election, a Florida retiree made the surprise announcement Tuesday night that he was running for president,” the story continued.

“In a move no political pundit saw coming, avid golfer Donald J. Trump kicked things off at Mar-a-Lago, his resort and classified-documents library.

“Trump, famous for gold-plated lobbies and for firing people on reality television, will be 78 in 2024. If elected, Trump would tie Joe Biden as the oldest president to take office. His cholesterol levels are unknown, but his favourite food is a charred steak with ketchup.

“He has stated that his qualifications for office include being a ‘stable genius’.

“Trump also served as the 45th president.”

The newspaper, owned by News Corp – publisher of news.com.au – officially jumped off the Trump train last week following the Republicans’ lacklustre midterm election performance.

A widely predicted “red wave” largely failed to eventuate with the exception of Florida, where Republican Governor and likely 2024 contender Ron DeSantis, 44, won re-election in a massive landslide.

Many of Mr Trump’s hand-picked endorsements fell short, sparking renewed calls for the party to move on and back Mr DeSantis.

On Thursday, the newspaper ran a scathing front cover branding the former president “Trumpty Dumpty”.

“Don (who couldn’t build a wall) had a great fall – can all the GOP’s men put the party back together again?” the cover read, pointing to an article by political analyst John Podhoretz.

In the piece, Podhoretz argued three straight elections proved “Toxic Trump is the political equivalent of a can of Raid”.

“What Tuesday night’s results suggest is that Trump is perhaps the most profound vote repellent in modern American history,” he wrote.

“The surest way to lose in these midterms was to be a politician endorsed by Trump. This is not hyperbole.

“Except for deep-red states where a Republican corpse would have beaten a Democrat, voters choosing in actually competitive races – who everyone expected would behave like midterm voters usually do and lean toward the out party – took one look at Trump’s hand-picked acolytes and gagged.”

The “Trumpty Dumpty” front page enraged Mr Trump, who issued an unhinged, rambling statement declaring war on Mr DeSantis – having previously only taken light jabs – and trashing News Corp.

“NewsCorp, which is Fox, the Wall Street Journal, and the no longer great New York Post (bring back Col!), is all in for Governor Ron DeSanctimonious, an average REPUBLICAN Governor with great Public Relations, who didn’t have to close up his State, but did, unlike other Republican Governors, whose overall numbers for a Republican, were just average – middle of the pack – including Covid, and who has the advantage of SUNSHINE, where people from badly run States up North would go no matter who the Governor was, just like I did!” the statement began.

Last week, The Wall Street Journal editorial board also took aim at Mr Trump.

“Mr Trump has botched the 2022 elections, and it could hand Democrats the Senate for two more years,” read the op-ed.

“Mr Trump had policy successes as President, including tax cuts and deregulation, but he has led Republicans into one political fiasco after another.”
