HE’S the Oscar-winning actor known for his dramatic pauses, eccentric looks and villainous characters.
Now septuagenarian Hollywood star Christopher Walken is adding ‘fitness guru’ to his resume.
The versatile star of many a cult classic — Pulp Fiction, Annie Hall, The Deer Hunter — has demonstrated his physical prowess in a pun-filled advert for Qantas’s new health insurance product.
To illustrate the ways in which customers can gain frequent flyer points by keeping active, the clip shows Walken performing such tasks as “walk-en”, “climb-en”, “dance-en” and “box-en”, all delivered in his trademark deadpan manner.
With a background in musical theatre and recent roles including Captain Hook in Peter Pan the musical, Walken’s got the moves.
It’s just that we’re so used to seeing him in roles that don’t focus on his physical capabilities.
The work of advertising agency With Collective, the Qantas campaign is running across TV, cinema, airports, outdoor and online, Mumbrella reports.
It promotes the airline’s health insurance wellness program, endorsed by The National Heart Foundation and in partnership with NIB.
Walken, who critics describe as “one of the few undeniably charismatic male villains”, has become a cultural icon thanks to his unique screen presence and willingness to embrace his meme status with good humour.
He is reportedly one of just two people who have a standing offer to host Saturday Night Live (along with Alec Baldwin).
It’s not the first time Walken has played on his name in an advert; at this year’s Super Bowl, he starred in a Kia ad in which he spooks a beige-wearing businessman inside his walk-in closet.
His straight-faced punchline compares a Kia motor car with “the world’s most exciting pair of socks”.
