PREMIUM smallgoods supplier Conroy’s has been fined $10,200 by the competition watchdog for trying to pass off Danish bacon as Australian.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission alleges Conroy’s sold 1,020kg of the breakfast favourite from Denmark with “product of Australia” labels to a local wholesaler.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims said misleading origin claims were unfair to customers and competing businesses.

“False claims of this kind not only mislead consumers but can also disadvantage competing suppliers, particularly those who source local ingredients for their products,” he said.

Conroy’s has provided legal undertakings not to make claims about products being Australian made unless all or virtually all production processes and main ingredients are local.

The ACCC targeted other premium food suppliers, including honey and beer manufacturers, earlier in 2015 for misrepresenting the origin of their products.
