FOXTEL has been flooded with new customer inquiries since announcing last week it would slash its entry level subscription fee, introduce new channels, offer the ability to binge-watch popular series and offer existing customers a swag of bonuses.

Those were just some of the major changes the subscription television giant will make to its service in a bid to attract new customers and reward its existing ones.

PRICES SLASHED: Foxtel responds to new competition

Richard Freudenstein, Foxtel’s chief executive officer, said his new mantra was “more” — more value, more content and more options.

“We’ve been able to work out a way to give a lot of great new content to our existing customers at no extra cost,” Mr Freudenstein said.

One of those special features is the BoxSets channel, to show complete seasons of popular programs such as Game of Thrones, Entourage, Girlsand Wentworth, to name a few.

“You can catch-up, re-watch and binge view when you like,” he said. “We’ll introduce new series each month so there will be great variety.

The biggest carrot being dangled in front of new customers is making Foxtel available for as little as $25 per month for the entry level Entertainment Pack.

The cost of the basic option, featuring more than 40 channels and an IQ set top recording box, will be 50 per cent cheaper from November 3, he said.

“We’ve grown our subscriber base quite well but we want to make Foxtel available to as many people as possible. We want to be in as many homes as we can.”

In addition, Foxtel has made changes to its add-on movie, sports, lifestyle and other packages to give viewers greater choice.

“Our existing customers are also excited about the things we’ll be giving them. It’s a lot of extra value. Our platinum customers, for example, get $20 worth of bonuses every month.”

Nine new high definition channels will be added across sports, movies and drama, bringing Foxtel’s total number to 36.

The company also confirmed that its new set top box, the iQ3, was in its final field trials and would be available to customers later this year.

The device will allow viewers to record more programming, including three programs at once, and include an innovative recommendation functionality as well as the ability to start over at the beginning of a show being watched.

Mr Freudenstein said the feedback so far had been very positive and he expected growth in subscription numbers as a result.

Foxtel is 50 per cent owned by News Corporation.
