Lindy Rama-Ellis has a lot of feathers in her cap. She’s a model, an entrepreneur, a Balinese princess, a newlywed, a mother-of-four, and a lover of all things fashion.
Given her background, it’s not surprising she knows a thing or two about spring racing style. This year, she was appointed ambassador for the 2018 Stella Artois Caulfield Cup Carnival, which kicks off on October 13 and runs until October 20.
“I’m loving full skirts paired with statement heels and beautiful, big boaters,” she told News Corp.
“I think another trend is bright, bold colour incorporated into a look, anywhere from accessories through to a killer dress or suit. I plan to wear a lot of that this year!”
Caulfield is famous for its fashion. It’s the first Carnival in Melbourne’s spring calendar and is the perfect arena to shrug off monochromatic winter wardrobes, experiment with new styles, and let personal flair shine in a full kaleidoscope of colours.
“No colour should be off-limits. Don’t be afraid to clash prints and fabric. I think the bolder the better this year,” said Lindy.
“I love the idea of bold colours clashing with sequins - basically, anything different that you’re comfortable enough to try. Remember that confidence is key.”
It’s a progressive, contemporary and fun event that welcomes all types of style - elegant, edgy, experimental or even eccentric - as long as it fits within the dress regulations.
Gentlemen are asked to wear a collared shirt and tie with a jacket, sports coat or blazer and tailored pants. However, finishing touches like pocket squares, lapel flowers and headwear are “applauded”. Ladies, meanwhile, are simply required to be semi-formal - and are “encouraged to wear millinery”.
“I love how racegoers at Caulfield can have fun with fashion, and show off their own personal flair on each of Caulfield’s leading race days,” said Lindy.
“Accessories always make every outfit. There’s nothing better than styling a nice dress or pant suit with the right accessories to complete the look. At the moment, I’m loving statement shoes and clutches.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be the races without gorgeous millinery. Lindy said she is particularly excited about meeting Nick Fouquet, a bespoke hat maker from California who will be attending this year’s event.
“I can’t wait to see what he brings to the races! I think this year girls should experiment more with hats.”
Fashion lovers should also head down to the David Jones Fashion Stable to see the twice daily runway shows. There’s also the opportunity for race goers to enter the Style Stakes competition on course and be in the running to win $25,000 worth of prizes.
“The judges will be looking for how you own your outfit, and how you interpret the style from head to toe. Be different, be daring and have fun in the digital photographic studio,” said Lindy.
“I can’t wait to see all of the entries.”
