WE'RE living in a pretty interesting, yet crazy, innovative and uncertain job environment.
Our careers have the potential to develop rapidly, robots are the new passionate twenty-something ready to take your job and we’re constantly trying to find roles that we actually enjoy. All while trying to pay the bills, do a bit of travel and enjoy a quiet (or loud) drop of red every now and then.
It’s more competitive than ever before, and with so many global booms going on, you need to keep that finger on the pulse. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has lent us a hand, with their 2018 Industry Overview clueing us in on the careers and industries that are taking off.
We’ve dusted off our crystal ball to let you in on what the hottest careers are set to be over the next decade.
Mining & Energy // 38 per cent growth
Despite what we’ve heard over the past few years about the mining bubble dying, and the industry struggling at times, nothing could be less true. We’re seeing extremely high job growth in Australia of late, so it’s worth keeping note. There were 54 per cent more jobs advertised on Seek in 2017 compared to 2016, and as we see the demand for renewable and external sources of energy start to skyrocket, it’s a good time to be in this space. Start learning.
Agriculture // 23 per cent growth
While we’re seeing some parts of Australia battling severe drought, a career in agriculture is still a very popular one. The lack of products during drought inevitably comes with high demand when certain products are available, and the industry as a whole has showed strong growth in recent years. With roughly 485,000 people employed across country, you won’t lack openings.
Administrative & Support Services // 11 per cent growth
Maybe a slightly surprising inclusion, but admin and office support services are going through a very promising period when it comes to development. With 11 per cent growth in revenue and 3.5 per cent growth in jobs nationally, new business booms mean a handful of job opportunities. And while you may not naturally think of flashy jobs in this industry, roles in Auditing, Contract Management, Assisting and Analysis can fetch you those six-figure dream salaries. Jackpot.
Science & Tech // 9 per cent growth
Behind every great groundbreaking moment, is a team of great scientists. With all of the innovation looking to be done in the world, someone needs to actually do the research and early stage detailing. It’s not exactly a walk-in type of industry, so you’ll need to have some study under your belt, but it’s a career that will rise – as the demand does. There has been a strong growth in jobs too (with a 26 per cent rise on Seek), so plenty of opportunity.
Electricity, Water, Gas & Waste Services // 8 per cent growth
Spread across all types of key trade and service spaces, the industry is booming. They’re the key things households and businesses need, and clearly there is still high demand in the space. From installation to management and systems, there are a handful of ways to get involved.
Rental & Real Estate // 6 per cent growth
Negative gearing anyone? This one is probably not a surprise to many of you, and yes, the real estate market is pretty hot at the moment. So it might be worthwhile to finally dip your toe in the property game (if you haven’t already). Whether it’s ownership, valuation, investment or a focused career in property development, it’s a flexible career space with plenty of interest.
Health Care // 4 per cent growth
It’s something we often take for granted when we’re a bit younger, but we’re pretty blessed to have strong health care in Australia. And when it comes to the industry as a whole, it’s a career space that is often in need. With a 2.6 per cent increase in jobs nationally, and an 11 per cent increase of jobs on Seek, there are prospects out there. And it’s not just the staple careers like dentistry, medical and nursing, it also expands into areas like pharmaceutical, physiotherapy and home care. As we live and push ourselves harder, the need only becomes greater.
Transport & Logistics // 3 per cent growth
Moving things has never been more valuable, and with the rapid development of brands like Amazon, eBay, Etsy and AliBaba, the train isn’t slowing down. With the popularity in the online and eCommerce space comes the need for high quality supply chain, transport and logistics. Seek saw a strong 15 per cent increase for jobs in this space, and the industry offers careers across all entry points, making it a pretty attractive and flexible area to be in.
Arts // 1 per cent growth
Do you have the cliché arts degree? Well the joke is on everyone who has ever given you grief about it, because it could be handier than ever before. The beauty of arts, as a wider industry and career, is that you have the flexibility to bounce between jobs. From media, to design, PR and advertising they’re all spaces that continue to create demand. Not only are there openings, but these roles have big money salaries waiting as you climb that ladder.
