Fun things to do in central Sydney this month
No matter your family’s budget, there are plenty of fun things to do in central Sydney this December and January. Here are a few places to start.
The Daily Telegraph has partnered with Mitsubishi Motors to keep you connected to your local community.
See a giant gingerbread train
Sweet tooths won’t be able to get enough of pastry chef Anna Polyviou’s giant gingerbread train at the Shangri-La near Circular Quay. It’s four metres long and contains more than one tonne of gingerbread and 500kg of lollies, all held together with buckets of icing. Best of all, you can check it out for free.
Where: Shangri-La Hotel, 176 Cumberland Street, Sydney.
When: Monday 3 December until Monday 31 December 2018, 7am - 9pm.

Virtual reality winter wonderland
Put on a virtual reality headset and see the shops turned into a winter wonderland at Market City. In the custom-built gaming experience, you’ll be asked to defeat a giant snowman attempting to destroy Christmas. Prizes will be awarded daily, with $30,000 worth of goodies up for grabs. The overall top scorer will also take home a Santa sack worth $1500.
Where: Market City, 9-13 Hay Street, Haymarket.
When: Monday 26 November until Wednesday 26 December, 11:30am-5:30pm.

Choirs in the city
Nothing says Christmas like carols. The city’s best choirs and a cappella groups will be popping up in Martin Place and the Pitt Street Mall performing carols every day until Christmas Eve. The GPO Dessert Bar will also be back for the fifth year in a row, so you can enjoy a range of treats and drinks as the singers perform at the base of the big Christmas tree.
Where: Martin Place and Pitt Street Mall, Sydney.
When: Saturday 24 November until Monday 24 December, 6pm-8pm.

Sydney Fish Market seafood marathon
One of the best things about Christmas in Sydney is the abundance of delicious, fresh seafood. The Sydney Fish Market will be open for a marathon 36 hours right before Christmas to give you the chance to come down, experience the frenzy, and stock-up on all the fish, prawns and calamari you could ever want. Even if fish isn’t your thing, the people-watching is guaranteed to be entertaining.
Where: Corner of Pyrmont Bridge Road and Bank Street, Sydney.
When: 5am on Sunday 23 December until 5pm on Monday 24 December.

New Year’s Eve
There’s a reason why some 1.5 million people cram into Sydney Harbour each year for New Year’s eve. The city puts on a spectacular show. This year’s highlights include an aerial display, a welcome to country and smoking ceremony, family fireworks, a harbour-wide Dreaming ceremony, and of course, the show-stopping midnight fireworks display. Check out the SYDNYE website to find the best vantage point.
Where: Vantage points right around Sydney Harbour.
When: Monday 31 December, 6pm-12am.
