Who do the odds like to win at the 2023 Oscars? Academy Awards Betting Guide

The 2023 Oscars are here: does the Everything Everywhere All at Once juggernaut roll on? Who do the odds like for Best Actor, Best Actress and the other major awards?

The 2023 Academy Awards are shaping up as one of the single most fascinating Oscars – non-Will Smith slapping Chris Rock division – in a while.

Will the brilliant Everything Everywhere All At Once prove dominant – up for Best Picture, Actress, Supporting Actress (twice!), Supporting Actor, Director (The Daniels), Original Score, Screenplay, Costume Design and Film Editing!? – or will there be a left-field spoiler?

What of the Aussies? Does Cate Blanchett get recognised for her amazing work in Tár? Can Aussie Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis score any nods from its eight nominations?

Elsewhere, can Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick make any inroads after ‘saving’ cinemas? Does Steven Spielberg etch his name into history with another Best Director nod for his lightly-brushed biographical The Fablemans?

So many questions remain unanswered before the 2023 Oscars, which means we should see plenty of fireworks.

With that in mind, what are the 2023 Oscar odds saying?

BEST PICTURE

Everything Everywhere All At Once (EEAAO) is an almost unbackable favourite at this point, which is still an incredible story. Considering it came out just after last year’s Oscars, for it to have this much hype and momentum behind it still is a big indicator that it’s sitting firmly at the forefront of voters’ minds.

If there were to be a spoiler, The Banshees of Inisherin is the best look: it screams ‘serious film’, and won the Golden Globe over EEAAO, while All Quiet on the Western Front lacked the big time cut-through a war film like 1917 or Dunkirk possessed.

Meanwhile, it’s the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, not the Academy of Mate, That Was Awesome, so Top Gun: Maverick won’t get a look in (sadly, cos mate, Top Gun: Maverick was awesome.)

The Fablemans won the Globe for drama, but it’s hard to see it get up.

  • Everything Everywhere All At Once – $1.05
  • All Quiet on the Western Front – $12
  • The Banshees of Inisherin – $13
  • Top Gun: Maverick – $21
  • The Fablemans – $34
  • Tár – $34
  • Avatar: The Way of Water – $81
  • Elvis – $101
  • Triangle of Sadness – $101
  • Women Talking - $101

THE PICK:Everything Everywhere All At Once – $1.05

BEST VALUE:The Banshees of Inisherin – $13

BEST ACTRESS

The most hotly-contested Oscar of the night in the major categories, this comes down to Yeoh becoming the first Asian woman to not only being nominated but to win Best Actress, or Blanchett taking home her third Oscar and second Best Actress nod after winning in 2014 for Blue Jasmine (and Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for The Aviator).

The pair split the Golden Globes (Yeoh for Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Blanchett for Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Drama) while Yeoh won the Screen Actors Guild award.

Yeoh might be the unlucky EEAAO casualty if it looks like winning Best Picture and Best Director, but it’s such a juggernaut AND her performance was so stunning, she should win it anyway. Yeoh was legitimately incredible in EEAAO and should take this out.

  • Michelle Yeoh - Everything Everywhere All At Once: $1.70
  • Cate Blanchett - Tár: $1.82
  • Andrea Riseborough - To Leslie: $26
  • Ana de Armas - Blonde: $51
  • Michelle Williams - The Fablemans: $51

THE PICK: Michelle Yeoh - Everything Everywhere All at Once: $1.70

BEST VALUE: Cate Blanchett - Tár: $1.82

BEST ACTOR

This comes down to the Academy deciding to reward Brendan Fraser for his long, amazing career and epic transformation in The Whale – which saw him win the SAG award – or lean to Austin Butler for talking like Elvis in a movie that folks gave a collective ‘meh’ to, but whose performance earned him a Golden Globe nod.

But keep an eye out for Colin Farrell: he delivered a masterful ride in Banshees and voters might have tried to split the difference and land with the former bad boy.

  • Brendan Fraser - The Whale: $1.75
  • Austin Butler - Elvis: $2.10
  • Colin Farrell - The Banshees of Inisherin: $13
  • Paul Mescal - Aftersun: $51
  • Bill Nighy - Living: $51

THE PICK: Brendan Fraser - The Whale: $1.75

BEST VALUE: Colin Farrell - The Banshees of Inisherin: $13

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

This is another tight battle, but look for Banshees to get rewarded for missing out in the other major categories and EEAAO to be ‘punished’ for being a sci-fi multiverse saga.

  • The Banshees of Inisherin: $1.70
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once: $2.10
  • The Fabelmans: $21
  • Tár: $21
  • Triangle of Sadness: $34

THE PICK:The Banshees of Inisherin: $1.70

BEST VALUE:The Fablemans: $21

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

If Best Actress was the tightest two-way race of the major categories, then Best Supporting Actress is an absolute bloodbath at the top between three likely winners.

Angela Bassett was amazing in a very blah Marvel movie, while Kerry Condon and Jamie Lee-Curtis were fantastic in Banshees and EEAAO respectively. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if either Bassett or JLC get the nod here as an acknowledgment of their incredible careers.

JLC took out the SAG award, while Bassett won the Globe: Queen Ramonda is favourite to come out a winner, but it will be tight. JLC might be another casualty of voters not wanting EEAAO to run the table.

  • Angela Bassett - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: $1.90
  • Kerry Condon - The Banshees of Inisherin: $2.80
  • Jamie Lee Curtis - Everything Everywhere All at Once: $2.90
  • Hong Chau - The Whale: $26
  • Stephanie Hsu - Everything Everywhere All at Once: $26

THE PICK: Angela Bassett - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: $1.90

BEST VALUE: Jamie Lee Curtis - Everything Everywhere All at Once: $2.90

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Folks watching Everything Everywhere All at Once would be forgiven for wondering “hang on, is that Short Round from Temple of Doom? Data from Goonies?”

Well, how about Ke Huy Quan: Oscar winner?

Love it.

Yep. For anyone who grew up in the ‘80s, Ke Huy Quan is a cultural touchstone from appearing in Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom and The Goonies: that it took this long – after stepping away from acting for 20 years – for him to land the perfect adult role is an indictment on Hollywood’s treatment of Asian actors, and in particular over the past 40 years.

He was amazing in EEAAO as well and would be a hugely deserving winner.

If anyone can sneak up on him, it might be Brendan Gleeson, a wildly respected actor who did great work in Banshees… but if Ke Huy Quan doesn’t win, we riot.

  • Ke Huy Quan - Everything Everywhere All at Once: $1.10
  • Barry Keoghan - The Banshees of Inisherin: $8
  • Brendan Gleeson - The Banshees of Inisherin: $9
  • Brian Tyree Henry - Causeway: $51
  • Judd Hirsch - The Fabelmans: $51

THE PICK: Ke Huy Quan - Everything Everywhere All at Once: $1.10

BEST VALUE: Brendan Gleeson - The Banshees of Inisherin: $9

BEST DIRECTOR

Yeah. Even with Spielberg delivering some of his finest work in years, this one is going to The Daniels.

Everything Everywhere All At Once’s multicultural directing duo might seem like an unconventional pick, but EEAAO was a directorial delight, not least due to its ability to wrap an immigrant allegory into a sci-fi multiverse tale.

The only pause would be the case of the Academy avoiding directing duos – only four directing duos have ever been nominated – but when they DO get the nod, the duo has tendency to win (two of the four have walked away winners: Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise for West Side Story and Joel and Ethan Coen for No Country For Old Men).

Spielberg is lurking, but the Daniels should have this.
