What we learned from the final trailer for Game of Thrones season four
THIS is your last chance to get a sneak peak of the new Game of Thrones season, and glimpse some of the show’s most intriguing plot lines. Come on, you know you can’t get enough of this stuff.
AS YOU know, there is no such thing as “overkill” when it comes to Game of Thrones.
The word doesn’t exist in any sense. Main characters are murdered en masse. There are gratuitous sex scenes in practically every episode. And HBO has no problem releasing four trailers — count ‘em, four! — to promote the upcoming season.
Overkill? Don’t be silly.
Now, we’re dutiful fans of the show, so when the fourth (and final) trailer was released we put our bemusement aside and soaked it in.
The clip drew our attention to some old plot lines that remain unresolved as we enter season four.
1. THE WAR BETWEEN THE STARKS AND EVERYONE ELSE
Obviously, the Starks have lost their war against the Lannisters. But the family’s story isn’t over.
“The Starks have always ruled the north,” Ramsay Snow says in the trailer. “If they are alive, the country will rally to their side."
Ramsay may be nuts, but Roose Bolton’s illegitimate son is not stupid.
Neither is Jaime Lannister. We glimpse Jaime asking his secret crush, Brienne, to find Arya, who has been on the run since the end of season one, casually threatening to kill practically everyone else in Westeros.
The Starks’ enemies clearly haven’t dismissed them completely yet, so we probably shouldn’t either.
2. THE PSEUDO-WAR BETWEEN TYRION AND CERSEI
“Your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you will know the debt is paid.”
Those words were first spoken by Tyrion back in season three. He was threatening his sister, Cersei, who recalls the scene in a bitter tone at the start of the trailer.
Later, we catch another glimpse of Tyrion in his prison cell, and get a rather blatant hint regarding who put him there.
“Sooner or later, Cersei always gets what she wants,” he says.
We sense some unresolved family issues.
3. THE WAR BETWEEN GOOD STANNIS AND RELIGIOUS NUTJOB STANNIS
Granted, he spent most of season three moping around Dragonstone like a depressed teenager, but Stannis is still the guy with the most legitimate claim to the Iron Throne. He also has a witch on his side, which has to count for something.
Still, Joffrey is under the impression that Stannis was beaten for good at the Battle of the Blackwater.
“I broke Stannis,” Joffrey says, further entrenching his reputation as a delusional, self-absorbed little brat. The other Lannisters know better.
Melisandre talked about “a great battle in the snow” when we saw her last, so Stannis may be heading north in season four. Expect her to keep fighting with Ser Davos for the would-be king’s soul.
4. THE WAR BETWEEN JAIME AND HIS URGE TO BE INCESTUOUS
“Why have the gods made me love a hateful woman?”
That’s a fair question, but while he’s at it Jaime should probably wonder why that hateful woman happens to be his sister.
There was definitely some tension between Jaime and Brienne last season. As opposed to Cersei and her future husband Loras, who share about as much sexual chemistry as Theon Grejoy and dear Ramsay Bolton.
We should probably expect some awkward conversations between Jaime and Cersei this season.
You can catch Game of Thrones season four on Foxtel’s Showcase channel, starting on April 7.
