Netflix reveals trailer and release date for The Politician

Netflix paid $US300 million to lure top producer Ryan Murphy into its ranks. This is the first look we’ve had at his launch project.

The Politician Trailer

The first show from mega-producer Ryan Murphy’s reportedly $US300 million Netflix deal will drop on September 27.

Starring Ben Platt, Zoey Deutsch, Jessica Lange, Lucy Boynton and Gwyneth Paltrow, dark comedy The Politician has launched its first trailer today.

It’s set in the rarefied air of wealthy California, a world of coastal opulence and high-achieving private schoolers.

Payton Hobart (Platt) is the adopted son of a rich family who has only one goal in life: to be President of the United States. For Payton, the path to his destiny is mapped out and the next step is to be elected Student Body President of his fancy school.

Like Tracy Flick, he’ll do anything to get there, and he won’t be held back by any midwestern earnestness.

It’s a ruthless game of manipulation and seduction, but how many of his morals will he have to compromise for the win?

The Politician is the first Netflix project from high-profile producer Murphy, who’s behind TV hits including Glee, American Horror Story, American Crime Story and Pose.

Earlier this year, in a shock move, Murphy left 20th Century Fox TV for a reported $US300 million five-year deal with Netflix to create content for the streaming service. Given the expensive price tag attached to Murphy’s talent, there are a lot of eyes on how The Politician will turn out.

Murphy’s deal followed a lucrative, albeit not $US300 million lucrative, Netflix signed with producer Shonda Rhimes, who was lured away from ABC Television with a reported $US100 million deal in 2018.

Rhimes created the likes of Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder and Scandal.

Apple reportedly paid Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston $US1.25 million per episode for Morning Wars, which released a full trailer today.

It’s a sign of the changing of the guard with tech companies such as Netflix and Amazon spending big money to seal deals with talent or to secure in-demand titles for their streaming services.

Amazon is said to have paid $US250 million to land the rights for a Lord of the Rings series and has hired Bryan Cogman, of Game of Thrones fame, as a writer on the fantasy epic.

The Politician will land on Netflix on September 27.
