Girlboss is cancelled by Netflix after only one season

THE streaming service is building on its ruthless reputation after they made the decision to cut one of its original shows after only one season.

NETFLIX has put another one of their original shows on the chopping block, and this time it’s Girlboss that is getting axed.

According to Deadline, the streaming service opted not to renew the comedy series for a second season after it debuted on April 21.

Girlboss, which is based on Sophia Amoruso’s best-selling autobiography about starting the vintage clothes website Nasty Gal, starred Britt Robertson and Ellie Reed.

The show was produced by Charlize Theron and centred on Robertson’s character Sophia who navigates her way around San Francisco’s vintage clothes scene.

Amoruso, who the show was based on, commented on the cancellation on Instagram and expressed her relief about “looking forward to controlling my narrative from here on out”.

“So that Netflix series about my life got cancelled. While I’m proud of the work we did, I’m looking forward to controlling my narrative from here on out,” she wrote in a series of Instagram stories.

“It was a good show, and I was privileged to work with incredible talent, but living my life as a caricature was hard even if only for two months. Yes, I can be difficult. No, I’m not a d*ck ... It will be nice to someday tell the story of what’s happened in the last few years,” she added.

While the cancellation of Girlboss might shock some of its more loyal fans, Netflix’s decision to cut the show only emphasises what the streaming service’s co-founder Reed Hastings said earlier this month.

After Netflix came under fire for cancelling two of their popular original shows Sense8 and The Get Down, Hastings told CNBC fans should brace for plenty more cancellations because their “hit ratio is way too high now”.

Considering the streaming service’s radio silence over their viewers and ratings, it’s difficult to know whether or not a show is doing well — something the world isn’t going to find out anytime soon.

“You can tell when we cancel a show. So, I’m always pushing the content team, we have to take more risks, you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall,” he said.

For those who might find that confusing, Hastings explained that “by taking big swings, you get some winners that are just unbelievable winners”.

And, it’s those big swings that led to the shocking success of the controversial 13 Reasons Why.

“It surprised us. It’s a great show, but we didn’t realise just how it would catch on,” he added.

13 Reasons Why, which stars Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford, is still the most-tweeted about show of 2017.

The Get Down became one of the streaming service’s most expensive shows after it went over budget and started costing more than $US16 million an episode to make. Sense8 cost more than $US9 million an episode due to its extensive filming locations and ensemble cast.
