Toni Collette wore a showstopping green outfit for her latest round of press interviews, but it turned out to be a major faux pas thanks to a hilarious technical problem.

The Australian actress, 50, shared behind-the-scenes photos from her recent media day alongside co-star Monica Bellucci, where they were promoting the new action comedy filmMafia Mamma, which hit cinemas on Thursday.

But her decision to wear a striking green Maison Valentino pant suit was ill-fated, with Collette claiming “no one” told her the filmed interviews would take place on a green screen.

The result, as the green screen background was changed to different colours - and so was Collette’s dress? A floating Toni Collette head.

“When nobody tells you that the @mafiamammamovie press junket set involves a green screen and you wear your best @maisonvalentino green jumpsuit to work,” she wrote, alongside the before-and-after photos.

It seems Collette did ultimately change her wardrobe, appearing on the Today show on Thursday in the same setting – only this time, she was wearing a black blazer and orange shirt.

In Mafia Mamma, Collette plays Kristin Balbano, a middle-aged American woman who, amid a rough patch in her personal and professional life, unexpectedly inherits her late grandfather’s mafia empire in Italy.

While it’s billed as a comedy, reviews have indicated the film is surprisingly gory. Though at its core, Collette said it was a story of female empowerment.

“One of the things I loved about this movie is it’s ultimately very empowering,” Collette told Nine co-host Karl Stefanovic.

“This woman is downtrodden, overlooked, treated like crap and then she’s sideswiped by this invitation to Italy and her life trajectory completely changes – but it is not done in a way that’s preachy or dogmatic.”

Collette has also been in the headlines on a personal front in recent months, after announcing her shock divorce in December.

Taking to Instagram at the time, the Emmy winning actress revealed she had split from her husband Dave Galafassi, whom she wed in 2003.

“After a substantial period of separation, it is with grace and gratitude that we announce we are divorcing,” a joint statement read.

“We’re united in our decision and part with continuing respect and care for each other. Our kids are of paramount importance to us and we will continue to thrive as a family, albeit a different shape.

“We’re thankful for the space and love you grant us as we evolve and move through this transition peacefully. Big thanks.”
