Tim Bailey’s most memorable TV moment
THE enthusiastic weather presenter is celebrating 25 years on TV with Ten and there’s one live cross in particular that he’ll never forget.
HE’S the pint-sized star who has just racked up an incredible milestone.
Tim Bailey today celebrates 25 years with Ten in a career that has included working on Good Morning Australia, Totally Wild and The Big Breakfast.
But Bailey is best known for his work as an incredibly enthusiastic TV weatherman.
He’s done thousands of live weather crosses over the years and Bailey considers himself pretty lucky not to have had any major disasters.
“You’re in the lap of the gods with the elements, with the technical side of things and also with d**kheads,” he said.
Bailey’s worst encounter with d**kheads involved a couple of actual d**k heads (it’ll make sense if you read on).
“The worst one and the best one was on Mt Panorama for Bathurst,” he said to news.com.au.
“It’s tough up there because they’re another breed those people. We drove up and they [racing fans] stopped the truck and told us that we had to do a burnout otherwise they wouldn’t let us through. We were in the big, live cross truck. So we did the burnout and then a bloke jumps onto the bonnet of the truck and starts smashing the windscreen with a dead rabbit. There was blood all over the windscreen.
“We got through and set up and we’re ready to go [for the live cross]. I’m about to go on air and about two seconds before, out comes this guy with a potato mortar. He said he’d been looking for me all day. On air I go, and security grabbed the guy and his potato mortar.
“I do the cross and I finish and everyone is pissing themselves laughing behind me. I look around and there’s two blokes in the nude!”
(See, the d**k heads joke makes sense now, doesn’t it?)
When asked how much longer he’d like to present the weather on Ten (he’s currently on air in Sydney), Bailey said, “I’d be pleased with another two or three years.”
But guess what, the TV personality is actually 54 years old. Seriously.
“I haven’t had a real job in 25 years,” Bailey said when asked how he’s managed to maintain such a youthful appearance.
“I train in my own backyard and I do 500 sit-ups and push-ups Monday to Friday ... but I do that for no other reason than to be able to drink beer.”
You can bet he’ll be drinking a few beers tonight to celebrate. Well done, Tim!
