They shared a stage on The Voice, but clearly not the same political opinions — with Darren McMullen calling out his former co-star Sonia Kruger for her controversial call to stop Muslim immigration to Australia.

The Scottish-born, LA-based, Australian TV presenter of Seven’s upcoming series The Big Music Quiz said while he appreciated Kruger’s “right to her opinion,” aired in the wake of the Bastille Day attack in France, “I totally disagree with her.

“Unfortunately it came from a place of fear with her, and if we’re coming at any problem like this, with fear, we’re going to make some silly decisions.”

Sonia Kruger was in the spotlight for her controversial call to stop Muslim immigration to Australia.
Sonia Kruger was in the spotlight for her controversial call to stop Muslim immigration to Australia.

While he has “always been very political and very forthright with my opinions”, he argued “I would hope that people in the public eye see that they do have a responsibility to be well-educated on the subject they’re speaking about”.

Kruger, who replaced McMullen at the helm of Nine’s singing contest this year, divided the nation with her comments during a Mixed Grill segment on Nine’s Today show.

McMullen described support for any proposed ban as “sad” in a country which, he said, should pride itself on being “such a diverse, multicultural society it has always been”.

“Let’s be honest, all us white folk are visitors in (Australia) and came off the boat at some stage for a better life. I find it a bit hilarious when people who invaded a country centuries ago and claimed it as their own then start trying to close up the borders and keep everyone out. I’m not a guy who believes in borders, I really don’t.

“I think we’re all human beings and until we actually start acting like human beings, of one human race, we’re going to have continuing problems.

“As soon as you start segregating people and saying ‘well, you have no right to call this place your home, this is my patch of land because my parents happened to have sex here, and I happened to have been born here, that I have more rights to live in this country than you …’ it’s absolutely absurd, utterly absurd.”

He continued: “The best thing is to sit down with people with those views and converse and work together to stop this epidemic of psychopaths killing people.

“I think anybody who has read up on the subject knows the majority of people who have been killed by these people are actually of the Muslim religion and not people of Western religions and they (Muslims) are hurting just as much.”
