ARE the 'Chump' jackets used in The Block: All Stars a bit of fun or a nasty joke?

One of the show’s most competitive contestants, Dani, certainly thinks the latter.
On Sunday night’s show after she was forced to wear the yellow jacket emblazoned with the word “Chump” for the second week running after getting the lowest score in the room reveal, Dani let rip at producers.
“I think the actual Chump idea is the most @#$%&% (BEEP) in the history of The Block, because it makes people dwell on the fact that they've lost,” she fired.
“I think it's like a humiliation plot. It's not as fun this week putting on the jackets. We've had a tough week,” she added.
But the show’s co-creator Julian Cress said the ‘Chump’ idea was not theirs and can be attributed to past contestant Rod, who ironically never had to wear the jacket.
“It was a bet between a bunch of mates. Whoever came last had to celebrate the fact they came last and be a good sport about it by wearing something with 'Chump' written on it,” he told news.com.au.
“We thought it was hilarious so we ran with it.”
Cress says children in particular have embraced the idea, turning up to then open inspections of the Block houses wearing T-shirts and hats decorated with the word "Chump".
“Obviously, it has become a bit more controversial now because the contestants suddenly feel like it’s the end of society as we know it if they have to wear one but no one ever complains about it when they win,” said Cress.
He points out that the same can be said of the contestant’s outrage at the judges’ comments which have been called "hypocritical" and "unfair".
“There are times in the competition when fierce competitors like Dan and Dani and Josh and Jenna let loose because they feel like they have been kicked in the guts. They put their heart and soul into their projects so it’s understandable,” adds Cress.
The Block: All Stars attracted a total audience of 1,119,000 on Sunday night while Seven had the two highest rating shows of the night with Seven News and Downton Abbey. The Matthew Newton interview on 60 minutes also rated well.
