Take a look behind the scenes of Game of Thrones with series creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss
THIS video was created to promote season four of Game of Thrones, but it actually does a lot more than that. The clip contains a huge hint about the show’s future plot.
THE first thing you need to know about this video is that it’s narrated by Charles Dance.
You know. The guy who plays Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones, and whose particular manner of speaking single-handedly turned you into a Lannister fan.
OK, Tyrion may have helped.
The second thing you should know is that the clip contains a massive, gigantic, humungous hint regarding the future plot of the show. If you prefer your nights to be dark and full of uncertainty instead of electrifying theories, stop reading now.
We should give you some context. This video is supposed to give you a lighthearted peek inside the heads of Dan Weiss and David Benioff, the show’s writers and executive producers.
As part of that process, Weiss and Benioff tell the camera about their efforts to sell the whole “TV show” idea to George R.R. Martin, who wrote (and is still writing) the book series upon which Game of Thrones is based. He once called his proudest work “unfilmable”.
“We had this great, long, long lunch,” Benioff recalls. “He (Martin) said, ‘So who do you think is Jon Snow’s real mother?’
“We threw out our guess, and he gave that great poker face, and then slowly he smiled. And then we were in.”
That’s the question Martin asked the pair to test them. It’s how he decided to let them make the show. The answer is obviously pretty important.
As you may recall, we’ve been told for three seasons that Jon Snow is the illegitimate son of Ned Stark and a nameless, rather insignificant woman he met during the war against Aerys Targaryen.
Having only watched the show, I don’t know what’s coming, but I’d suggest Jon’s mother is a far more important character than we were led to believe. Heck, we probably don’t even know who his father is for sure — Ned was hardly the unfaithful type.
I’m happy to hear your theories (I may have a few of my own as well), but in the meantime you should watch the rest of the video. It’s damn funny. Unlike Jon Snow, who’s grumpier than a castrated Greyjoy.
