A longtime ABC newsreader who quit her job last year and was recently romantically linked to 3AW sports journalist Sam McClure is moving from Sydney to Melbourne to join Channel 7 news.

Karina Carvalho will take on a presenting and reporting role with 7News Melbourne starting on Monday, The Herald Sun reports.

The roles of current presenters Peter Mitchell, Rebecca Maddern and Mike Amor remain unchanged.

Carvalho joins the network as it transitions under new national new boss Anthony De Ceglie who has drastically culled the network’s news departments and introduced a comedy segment in the Friday night bulletin and a daily horoscope report.

The appointment comes after Carvalho revealed in December last year that she had quit her job as the ABC News channel presenter after 17 years with the broadcaster.

“The ABC will always have a special place in my heart, I’ve been able to meet and work with so many talented people,” she told The Australian ahead of her final bulletin.

“Now is the right time to venture into the next phase of my career and I’m excited to see what’s around the corner.

“I wish my colleagues at the ABC nothing but the best.”

Ms Carvalho anchored the ABC news program in Brisbane for five years and has co-hosted ABC News Breakfast in Melbourne.

In December the Herald Sun reported she was in a “slow burn” romance with 3AW and Nine radio’s McClure.

Carvalho turned frosty on Friday when the newspaper asked about her rumoured connection with McClure.

“I have been in the media for 20 years and I have never talked about my private life in an interview so I am not going to start now,” she said.

McClure also declined to comment.
