The Night Manager season two is finally in the works
Tom Hiddleston’s sexy spy series was compulsive and thrilling, and after seven years, it’s finally coming back.
A second season of Tom Hiddleston’s sizzling spy thriller, The Night Manager, is in the works.
According to Deadline, season two will be a joint production between Amazon Prime Video and the BBC and is currently in production under the codename of Steelworks.
While an official greenlit has not yet been given, Deadline wrote it is slated to be commissioned for a further two seasons. The writer for the original miniseries, David Farr, is expected to return to write the next instalment.
The Night Manager premiered in 2016 to wide acclaim, going on to be nominated for 12 Emmys and seven BAFTAs.
Based on a John Le Carre novel, the series starred Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, a former British soldier turned hotel manager who is recruited for an undercover mission to ensnare an international arms dealer.
Its high-profile cast also included Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki and Tom Hollander. Hiddleston is expected to reprise his role but there’s no word yet on any of the other cast members.
The Night Manager had many of the hallmarks of a quintessential spy thriller with its high-stakes game of espionage, a larger-than-life villain and its setting in several glamorous locales including Mallorca and Marrakesh.
Hiddleston in 2016 said of his character to the Los Angeles Times, “The whole story could be read as a discussion on identity. The fascinating thing about Pine is at the beginning, he is a shell of a human. He’s a shell of a man. He’s hiding.
“He was of military service in Iraq as a British soldier, and he’s now of service in other ways as a night manager. He’s hiding behind a uniform and, in that regard, the uniform protects him from having to reveal his identity.”
Soon after the series’ release, Hiddleston’s portrayal of a dynamic spy, and his considerable onscreen sexual chemistry with Debicki, catapulted him into serious contention as the next James Bond – at least in the eyes of the public.
It was considered such a sure bet, at one point UK bookmaker Coral suspended betting after punters threw their money behind the possibility.
However, a public relationship with Taylor Swift and a cringe Golden Globes acceptance speech – he apologised the next day – are seen to have dented his chances of nabbing the 007 role.
Meanwhile, The Night Manager’s popularity led its production company, The Ink Factory, to adapt another Le Carre novel, The Little Drummer Girl, which starred Florence Pugh and Alexander Skarsgard. There has also been an Indian remake with Aditya Roy Kapur as the lead.
Hiddleston’s next project is the second season of Loki, his Marvel Cinematic Universe streaming series. It will mark his 12th year playing Loki across a range of movies and streaming shows.
