The first Hawkeye trailer is here, and it’s a Christmas caper

There’s a certain formula to Marvel movies and shows, and the trailers are the same. So, this Hawkeye teaser was unexpected.

The last thing anyone would’ve expected of Hawkeye’s first trailer is the vibe of a Christmas caper.

Maybe it’s the enormous Christmas tree in Rockefeller Plaza or that the video is scored to Andy Williams’ It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, but it has some Home Alone 2 vibes.

That is most definitely not the vibe we’ve come to associate with Clint Barton/Hawkeye, arguably the most joyless of all the Avengers. Being silly and jocular is just not on-brand for him.

OK, OK, maybe that’s not fair. We have seen Clint be all semi-gooey with the secret family he was revealed to have in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Jeremy Renner has been in comedies – or he has been in at least one comedy, Tag.

Premiering on November 24, Marvel appears to be positioning the Hawkeye streaming series as family fun times, but still with the occasional explosion thrown in.

The trailer starts with Clint having family dinner with his wife and kids in New York, and maybe catching the Steve Rogers musical, before he bundles them off with the promise of being home for Christmas.

Something from his past has reared its head, enemies from when he was his other alter ego, the murderous Ronin who slayed dozens in the five years his family had been blipped away thanks to Thanos’ snapture.

Also on the scene – and possibly related – is Kate Bishop, a wannabe superhero that calls herself the world’s greatest archer.

Speculation is Kate Bishop is poised to take over the Hawkeye mantle from Clint, and certainly Hailee Steinfeld’s casting suggests that she’s going to have a significant role in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Steinfeld’s comedic talents also gel more with this MCU Christmas special – yes, that’s what we’re calling it. Steinfeld has more than proven herself in roles that require levity and slapstick.

The team-up between Clint and the younger Kate as mentor and mentee feeds into that family dynamic.

Other cast members for the show include Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon and Brian d’Arcy James.

Florence Pugh will also make an appearance as Yelena Belova, the character she originated on screen in Black Widow.

The Black Widow end credits showed Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ mysterious character pointing Yelena in Clint’s direction, calling him the man who got her sister Natasha killed, so we’re expecting a showdown.

Hawkeye is the fifth Marvel series to be released on Disney+, following WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki and animated series What If …?

Hawkeye will start streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday, November 24
