Netflix film Two has year’s most shocking sex scene

Two strangers wake up naked in bed together – but there’s a disturbing twist in the new Netflix thriller that’s shocking viewers.

WARNING: Spoilers for the Netflix movie, Two, below.

The set up of Spanish thriller Two on Netflix feels like the horror villain Jigsaw’s version of pornography.

Two strangers — Sara (Marina Gatell) and David (Pablo Derqui) — wake up to find themselves naked in bed together, stitched together at the abdomen. They’re arranged like lovers and soon learn that even the most slight bit of movement causes intense pain for both of them. What madman has done this? A literal schizophrenic (Kandido Uranga) with a very specific obsession with conjoined twins. Do Sara and David eventually have sex? You bet!

Netflix’s Two has what might be the weirdest, wildest, most disturbing, and (honestly?) confounding sex scene of 2021. Putting the torture part aside, the sex scene is followed up by a shocking twist that casts Sara and David’s fornication in a gross new light. Spoilers for Two ahead!

Two is a 70-minute-long film that begs the question, “Was there an intimacy co-ordinator on set?” I say that because actors Marina Gatell and Pablo Derqui literally spend the entire movie in the nude. For some of it, they’re covered up in towels, but they’re almost always close enough together to bump gonads.

The first two acts of Two deal with the duo trying to figure out who has sewn them together and why. The primary suspect seems to be Sara’s controlling husband Mario. David works as a male escort and seems to recall being hired by a guy to sleep with his wife. Could it be that Mario wants to be cuckolded in the most gruesome way possible? Hence the very tight and effective stitching job their captor has done?

Sex, torture and a shocking twist … maybe not one to watch with the family this holiday season.

Sara definitely seems to think so. After Sara and David kiss for the second time, she notices that their captor shuts off the lights when the two are romantic with each other. Sara takes this as proof it’s an upset Mario and begins passionately embracing David. The two have sex in the dark for a short amount of time before their jailer relents, offering them a way out of their room and towards answers.

Now before we get to the next bit, I found myself wondering about the logistics of the sex scene in Two. Not in an “intimacy co-ordinator” way, but in a “wait, wouldn’t that be difficult within the reality of the story?” way. If even the slightest movement causes intense pain for both Sara and David, wouldn’t that … you know … get in the way of sex? Even though we see the sex scene in shadow, the choreography seems pretty basic. That is, they don’t seem to be acting gingerly around their shared injury. Maybe I’m splitting hairs. Perhaps they were both so aroused they could have sex through the pain. If the latter is true, the next scene is pretty darn devastating for Sara, David, and you and me.

A film of “gore, nudity, dark humour and mystery.”

David and Sara discover that they are actually long-lost conjoined twins. They were the first (and only) case of a male/female set of conjoined twins and were placed in the foster care system after they were born. Their mother, Rita, died, and their father was a schizophrenic. In fact, it is their father who has kidnapped them and sewn them together. (No wonder he got creeped out by their naked make out sessions!)

So Sara and David were conjoined twins separated at birth and now their conjoined twins-obsessed father has kidnapped them, murdered Sara’s husband, and sewn them back together. While the film doesn’t really dig into the whole incest angle at play, from here on out, Sara and David are a team. A team set on killing their captor/father and escaping.

There is a scuffle between their father with a gun and David and Daddy Demented are left wounded. David insists to Sara that she has to cut herself free and look for help. Ultimately, they manage to finally tear themselves apart, but both David and Sara are doomed. Everyone dies! And Sara dies from bleeding out in the snow, which she travels through stark naked, thank you. The ultimate message of the film seems to be … conjoined twins are rad? I truly don’t know!

Two is a truly weird film full of gore, nudity, dark humour, and mystery, but it’s that sex scene will haunt me forever. It’s a bizarre scene because I guess it could have been fun and kinky — like, the idea of two people succumbing to desire in an intense torture situation has some inherent eroticism — but the incest and gory ending undo anything entertaining about it.
