True crime series’ are hot commodity right now, and the latest to hit streaming is one of the most gripping yet.

HBO’s anticipated new drama The Staircase hit streaming locally on Binge* May 5. It follows the real life story of US novelist Michael Peterson, who was convicted of murdering his wife Kathleen in 2003.

Eight years later the decision was successfully appealed, with Michael having his charge downgraded to manslaughter, thus allowing him to walk free from jail having already served time.

While the case may be closed, the story has been subject to intrigue and mystery for years as truly bizarre revelations emerged in court.

And now it’s finally gotten the drama treatment, with Oscar winning actor Colin Firth playing Michael, while Australian actress Toni Collette portrays Kathleen.

Who else is in the cast?

Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son Patrick Schwarzenegger join the star-studded cast alongside Firth and Collette.

Michael Stuhlbarg, Juliette Binoche, Dane DeHaan, Olivia DeJonge, Rosemarie DeWitt, Tim Guinee, Vincent Vermignon, Odessa Young and Parker Posey also make up the cast.

Created by Antonio Campos, The Staircase is co-produced by Annapurna Television. It’s written and executive produced by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, who also serve as showrunners. Campos directed six episodes and Leigh Janiak directed two episodes.
