Zendaya is back in her Emmy-award winning role in Euphoria, with season 2 finally dropping after lengthy delays.

Controversial teen series Euphoria is finally back with its second season.

The HBO drama, which earned 25-year-old US actress Zendaya an Emmy for Best Actress in 2020, has premiered the first episode of its follow-up season on Binge*, with new episodes set to drop weekly on Mondays.

Following a lengthy hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the second outing follows a hugely popular and oft-scandalous debut season in 2019.

Ahead of its initial release, one media watchdog group called for the US network’s parent company AT&T to pull the plug before it even made it into families’ living rooms.

Created by Sam Levinson, Euphoria follows a group of high school students as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex, trauma, and social media.

One episode became infamous when up to 30 penises flashed onscreen, and in the premiere, one character committed statutory rape with a 17-year-old trans girl, while it also depicted a confronting drug overdose.

The content was so disturbing that actor Brian “Astro” Bradley, 22, who shot scenes in the pilot episode, reportedly opted to quit the series.

Parents Television Council president Tim Winter warned in a press release that “HBO, with its new high school centred show Euphoria, appears to be overtly, intentionally, marketing extremely graphic adult content — sex, violence, profanity and drug use — to teens and preteens.”

HBO programming president Casey Bloys previously insisted, “(Euphoria’s) not for everyone — it’ll inevitably get people talking” but “it’s not sensational to be sensational”.

Regardless, it proved immensely popular among viewers and season 2 will likely be no exception.
