Police are searching for witnesses to an incident at a busy railway that has a bizarre link to one of the most-watched television series in the world.

'Squid Game' becomes Netflix's most-watched show

Police are searching for witnesses after a knife-wielding man was seen wearing a costume similar to that worn by characters in the smash hit television series The Squid Game.

Witnesses reported seeing the 38-year-old man in Sydney’s Central Railway station about 11.40pm on Thursday before he boarded a train a few minutes later.

Officers entered the carriage and approached the man, who was allegedly carrying a knife.

Police allege the bizarrely dressed man “advanced towards” a female police officer, who deployed her taser.

The man was arrested and taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for assessment.

There were no injuries to police or other passengers on the train.

Police are urging anyone with relevant information or who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The incident comes after Netflix revealed The Squid Games was renewed for an eagerly-anticipated second season.

The first season of the South Korean dystopian thriller show became a global phenomenon when it was released in September 2021, and has since amassed more than 1.65 billion views.

It became the most-watched series in 94 countries across the globe and remains the most viewed show on Netflix.

The show follows an indebted father who is invited to play children’s games in return for a chance to win a massive cash prize.

However, he soon learns losing the games will have deadly consequences.

The second season of The Squid Game is slated to be released in December.
