Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion will stream in Australia on Stan

Australians will be able to stream the Fresh Prince reunion special at the same time as Americans – plus, all 148 episodes of the original series.

Not only is the long-awaited Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion special going to be available to Australian viewers this Thursday – the same time as the US – they’ll also be able to stream every episode of the original series too.

Because you know that wave of nostalgia is going to hit like a ton of bricks, and will only be satiated by bingeing all 148 episodes of fluoro fashion and earnest life lessons about family and love.

The Fresh Prince reunion will be heading to streaming service Stan where the original series will be also be available at the same time. Stan will also have the streaming rights to the upcoming remake, currently titled Bel-Air, which will reimagine the sitcom into a darker hour-long drama.

Now that’s something worth getting jiggy with. Oh wait, wrong Will Smith title. OK, now that’s something worth doing the Carlton dance over. That’s better.

Will Smith is back – of course – and as is the extended Banks clan including Tatyana Ali, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid, Alfonso Ribeiro, Karyn Parsons and even DJ Jazzy Jeff. And so is the first Aunt Viv, Janet Hubert who played the role for three seasons before being replaced by Reid.

The special has also promised to reveal even more special guests.

Unfortunately, James Avery, who played Philip Banks, died in 2013. In the recently released trailer, the cast is shown paying tribute to Avery and called him “the heart of the show”.

Rather than an episode of Fresh Prince, the reunion is more like a hang-out with the stars in which they reminisce about their experiences, sharing (hopefully) new titbits from behind the scenes and reflecting on the cultural impact of the series three decades on.

It was filmed on September 10, which was 30 years to the day of when Fresh Prince first premiered in the US.

The Bel-Air remake, based off a fan-film conceived by Morgan Cooper, is being pitched as a gritty take of the original story.

Set in modern day, the series follows Will Smith (the character) as he moves from Philadelphia to the glitzy mansions of Bel-Air, exploring the vastly different milieux with a more grounded sensibility.

Smith’s production company Westbrook Studios, which he runs with wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, will produce Bel-Air with Universal TV. It has already been greenlit for two seasons.

All six seasons of the original series is also available to stream on Netflix.
