Foxtel drama-comedy Upright has officially been renewed for a second season.

Tim Minchin will return as the character of Lucky Flynn for his ultimate passion project, which co-stars up-and-coming Australian actress Milly Alcock as his unlikely pal, Meg.

Season two will be another eight-part series, produced by Lingo Pictures for Foxtel and Sky UK, and will follow Lucky and Meg as they trade the desert for the steamy tropics of Far North Queensland on a new mission.

While Minchin’s name is well known on the Australian showbiz scene, Alcock is a budding star. The 20-year-old has been cast in the hotly-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, which will premiere on Foxtel and Binge in 2022.

Alcock recently popped up in the newly released trailer as Rhaenyra Targaryen, and is expected to return to Australia to film Upright early next year.

Foxtel executive director of television Brian Walsh said, “Tim Minchin’s Upright was a smash hit for Foxtel and a subsequent breakout success when it was brought to Binge audiences last summer.

“The series is uniquely Australian, brash and bold, full of fun and great heart. The story of Lucky and Meg, and their unexpected journey across the Nullarbor, won fans of all ages – and we’re set to take off once again on a memorable road trip with unexpected consequences.”

The first season, which premiered in 2019, was a runaway success, and was even hailed by Buffy creator Joss Whedon as his “favourite show since Fleabag”.

“Time commitment small. Reward huge,” Whedon wrote to this 250,000 followers on Twitter last year.

Minchin, 46, who is also back on board to co-write the series, told news.com.au the show was one of his most cherished career highlights.

“As a creator, because I was involved all the way down the line and it worked out, Upright’s the thing I’ve been most involved in that fulfilled my hopes,” he told news.com.au last year.

“Which is really hard when you’re making art at a huge scale. There’s always something you can’t control. (But) Upright, I’m so proud of it and proud of everyone involved.”
