Tres bon!

Streaming confection Emily in Paris has been renewed for a further two seasons, taking the Netflix series to at least four seasons. That’s a lot of breakfast croissants, selfies and wide-eyed American ingenues.

The double renewal should come as no surprise with the Lily Collins series one of Netflix’s most popular titles. The first season, which premiered in 2020, was ranked in the top 10 of Netflix’s most watched original series in the streamer’s history.

Since the second season debuted on December 22, it has been in the Netflix global top three, eclipsed only by new seasons of The Witcher and Cobra Kai.

In the week of its release, Netflix users spent 107 hours watching the new batch of episodes. The following week, to January 2, it was 94 million hours, according to data made public by the streamer.

Emily in Paris follows a young American marketing executive who unexpectedly finds herself in Paris when she is assigned to be the liaison to a French company. Her naivety about French culture often puts her at odds with her Parisian colleagues.

The second season sees her travelling to the French Riviera as well as exploring new work opportunities and romances.

The series is created by Darren Star, who is also behind Sex and the City and Younger.

The third season is expected to start filming later this year in Paris.

Despite its easygoing storyline and candy-coloured palette, Emily in Paris has had a controversial ride, criticised for its stereotypes of French society and its lightweight writing.

Most notably, it became mired in the wider Golden Globes scandal of 2021 when the frothy series was nominated for TV comedy series and TV comedy actress. It later emerged the studio had treated many members of the awards association to a set visit that included five-star accommodation and other perks.
