Dune franchise expanded with female-led spin-off Dune: Prophecy
Fans waiting for a highly anticipated third movie of this blockbuster can get their fix by tuning into its new spin-off series.
Dune fans eagerly waiting for a third Dune movie can get their fix in the meantime by tuning into its new spin-off series, Dune: Prophecy.
The first spin-off from the world of Dune is coming, with HBO today releasing a teaser trailer with a sneak peek of what’s in store.
Dune: Prophecy – airing locally on BINGE later this year – will act as a prequel to the two blockbuster films directed by Denis Villeneuve, and is set 10,000 years before the events of the sci-fi films, which saw the ascension of Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet in the movie, which also stars Zendaya).
This female-led spin-off follows the Harkonnen sisters, who battle a threat to humanity by setting up a sect that will eventually become the Bene Gesserit sisterhood – a powerful social, religious and political force.
“The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me,” Villeneuve has said of the show. “Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series.”
Stream Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two now on Prime Video, available on Hubbl.
Leading the order are Valya and Tula Harkonnen, played by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams respectively, founding members of the secret society who scheme and advise leaders in order to influence world events.
“Before the universe would know us as the Bene Gesserit, we founded a sisterhood, assigned to the great houses to help them sift truth from lies,” Valya narrates in the trailer.
“We created a network of influence throughout the Imperium. But power comes with a price.”
Members of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood are played by Rebecca Ferguson and Charlotte Rampling on the big screen.
The series is inspired by the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert, who is the son of original Dune series author Frank Herbert.
Under Villeneuve’s direction, Dune: Part One and Dune: Part 2 went on to become massive box office successes.
The second film has already raked in more than $US710 million ($1.05 billion) globally since its release in February, making it the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far.
