Disney+ series Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston, slammed over bisexual scene

A renowned screenwriter has hit out at Disney over the entertainment giant’s latest development for an iconic Marvel character.

A highly-respected screenwriter has called out streaming giant Disney+ for its “feeble” attempt at LGBTQ+ inclusivity after Marvel character Loki came out during an early episode of the popular series.

Russell T Davies, creator of It’s A Sin, Years and Years and the iconic series Queer As Folk came out swinging against Disney’s “pathetic” attempt at the storyline, calling the singular scene a “feeble gesture”, Pink News reports.

It comes amid widespread praise for the service for the move, with Loki becoming the first bisexual Marvel character on screen.

However, during a virtual Pride Month panel, Davies called the move “worrying”.

Speaking about his experiences with TV series commissioners, he said bosses are hungry for “more gay stories” now compared with earlier in his career.

“Nonetheless, I think huge, cleaning warning bells are ringing as the giants rise up with Netflix and Disney+ especially,” Davies added to the online panel.

“I think that’s a very great worry. Loki makes one reference to being bisexual once, and everyone’s like, ‘Oh my god, it’s like a pansexual show.’

“It’s like one word. He said the word ‘prince’, and we’re meant to go, ‘Thank you, Disney! Aren’t you marvellous?’

“It’s a ridiculous, craven, feeble gesture towards the vital politics and the stories that should be told.”

Loki’s revelation came during episode three of the series’ first season, which came out in June this year, during a heart-to-heart with another character.

During the chat, the brother of the hammer-wielding god Thor – played by Chris Hemsworth in the films – shared that he likes “a bit of both” when asked if he had a “princess” or “prince” waiting for him at the end of their crusade.

After the conversation, Loki’s bisexuality is largely ignored in the storyline.

Davies’ criticism of the move comes at a time of increased representation of the LGBTQ community in both Marvel and DC Comics, though not so much on screen.

This week, it was revealed Batman’s sidekick Robin is bisexual in the latest comic instalment of Batman: Urban Legends.

The story sees character Tim Drake accept an invitation to go on a date with a man named Bernard Dowd – thereby confirming Robin’s LGBTQ status after years of speculation from fans.

In March, Marvel unveiled their first gay Captain America character – a queer youth advocate named Aaron Fischer – to be included in the upcoming United States of Captain America comic book miniseries.

And last year, Marvel released a comic in which Chris Pratt’s character in Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord, is a polyamorous bisexual.
