Better Call Saul: Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul confirmed to revive Breaking Bad characters

Nine years after it went off air, Breaking Bad characters Walter White and Jesse Pinkman are making a comeback to TV.

Walter White lives.

The iconic TV antihero is making a comeback, albeit not quite as the gritty crime lord who met his sticky end. Was that a spoiler? Surely not, it’s been nine years.

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will revise their Breaking Bad characters in an upcoming episode of the final season of Better Call Saul.

Better Call Saul is a prequel spin-off focused on Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill, the less-than-scrupulous lawyer played by Bob Odenkirk. As Better Call Saul starts to wrap up with the sixth season, its timeline is about to crash into the main Breaking Bad one.

A Walter White and Jesse Pinkman appearance feels all but inevitable at this point – of course Walter will still be the downtrodden high school teacher we first met at the start of Breaking Bad.

Better Call Saul showrunner Peter Gould revealed the news during a PaleyFest LA panel, but he didn’t elaborate on exactly when or how fans should expect to see their Breaking Bad favourites.

You can’t keep Walter White down – especially in a prequel.

“I don’t want to spoil things for the audience but I will say the first question we had when we started the show was, ‘Are we going to see Walt and Jesse on the show?’. Instead of evading, I’ll just say yeah,” he revealed.

“How or the circumstances or anything, you’ll just have to discover that for yourself, but I have to say that’s one of many things that I think you’ll discover this season.”

Breaking Bad debuted in 2008 and became an immediate hit. The story about a high school science teacher turned drug criminal won critical plaudits, a huge fanbase and many awards including two consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series.

Cranston won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Emmy four times for his performance while Paul won the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Emmy three times during his run on the show.

A sequel film, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, was released on Netflix in 2019. It followed Jesse’s story after the dramatic events of the original series finale.

Better Call Saul streams in Australia on Stan.
