And Just Like That continuity error driving Sex And The City fan insane

A throwaway line between Charlotte York and her husband Harry Goldenblatt in the new season of the reboot is called out by one true Sex And The City fan.

One of the reasons I love watching And Just Like That … on Max is because I am a long-time Sex and the City nerd. I adored following the lives and loves of Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) in the ’00s and I adore doing it now 2023.

That said, one of the reasons And Just Like That often enrages me is because I am such a huge fan of the original HBO series, which streams locally on BINGE.

So much so that a throwaway line from Harry Goldenblatt (played by Evan Handler) in And Just Like That season 2, episode 2 “The Real Deal”, drove me insane.

When Harry says his mother’s been dead for 10 years, the continuity error alarm went off in my brain. There’s no way Harry’s mother has been dead since the 2010s. That’s because I vividly remember Harry telling Charlotte in the 2003 Sex and the City season 6 premiere “To Market, To Market” that he had to marry a Jew because he promised his dead mother he would.

And Just Like That, you just made a big mistake. Huge. To think that legions of SATC devotees like yours truly wouldn’t catch such an important Sex And The City continuity error!

In And Just Like That season 2 episode 2, Charlotte and Harry tell their teenage daughter Lily (Cathy Ang) that she will have to find the money for a high-end keyboard on her own. Instead of getting a part-time job, she sells most of her designer wardrobe online. Charlotte is furious and spends dinner waiting for the offending website, The Real Deal, to respond with a promise to return a Chanel dress along with an acknowledgment of what they did was wrong.

“Good luck,” Harry grumbles. “I’m still waiting for any acknowledgment from my mother and she’s been dead 10 years.”

Excuse me? That is NOT TRUE!

Let me take you back to the final season of Sex And The City for a minute. Charlotte found herself in quite the romantic quandary. To her great surprise, she fell madly in love with Harry Goldenblatt, the lawyer she chose to handle her divorce from first husband Trey (Kyle MacLachlan) specifically because she didn’t want to be distracted by a hotter lawyer at the same firm.

In the Sex And The City season 5 finale, Charlotte reveals her feelings to Harry. He bluntly tells her that he can’t wed the marriage-obsessed Charlotte because he has to marry another Jewish person.

In the Sex and the City season 6 premiere, Harry explains why it’s such a big deal.

“I promised my mother I would marry a Jew,” he says, “right before she died”.

When Charlotte realises her faith is non-negotiable, she embarks on the rigorous task of renouncing her Episcopalian background and converting to Judaism. After a few dramatic hiccups, she and Harry finally wed and embark on the happy marriage we see in And Just Like That.

Charlotte’s conversion is a huge arc for the character and proof of her commitment to Harry. And it was kicked off by this conversation where Harry brings up his mother’s death! While it’s possible Harry was being facetious, it seems out of character for the honest family man.

t might seem like an insignificant mistake, but it’s a mistake nonetheless. While it may not detract from And Just Like That …’s overall improvement in quality in Season 2, this continuity error pulled me, the SATC superfan, out of the show’s reality for a brief second … followed by several days where I obsessed about it. Call me a Charlotte about it because I don’t want to let it go.
