In a surprise move, one of the “best shows of the year” has just begun streaming in Australia.

All 12 episodes of I May Destroy You have hit Binge, after it aired overseas to widespread acclaim in June.

It’s a straightforward premise: A young woman seeks to rebuild her life after being raped. But the simple plot of I May Destroy You is what makes the messaging of this new series so painstakingly poignant.

The BBC One and HBO comedy-drama focuses on writer Arabella Essiuedu (Michaela Coel) who is considered a voice for millennials thanks to her popular debut book Chronicles of a Fed-Up Millennial.

On deadline for her second book, Arabella heads out in London to ease her stress when her drink is spiked on a night out and she is raped.

What follows is Arabella's distressing journey of trying to piece together what happened to her, and the devastating impact of sexual trauma on victims.

Aside from the series telling an all too common narrative in an original way, what makes I May Destroy You such powerful viewing is Coel’s own harrowing experience of sexual assault.

In addition to starring in the series, Coel also directed and wrote I May Destroy You. The English actor and filmmaker is best known for her role in the 2015 BAFTA award-winning comedy Chewing Gum.

While writing the second season of Chewing Gum in 2016, Coel met up with a friend where her drink was spiked and she was sexually assaulted by two men.

Coel recently discussed the parallels between herself and Arabella in an interview with Vulture.

“What does closure look like? It’s not that it ends,” Coel told the publication in July. “For me, I look at the last four years and I feel this overwhelming sense of euphoria and pain.”

And it’s fair to say euphoria and pain are the appropriate emotions to also describe the fans’ experiences watching the series.
