The third celebrity to be revealed on The Masked Singer has thrown the show’s judging panel and viewers a huge curveball.

Musical icon Ben Lee was unmasked on Sunday’s show as the singer inside the Professor costume. Lee is a multi-platinum artist and actor behind the hits “Catch My Disease”, “Love Me Like The World is Ending” and “We’re All in This Together”.

The guesses from the judges as to who was behind the costume were very far off the mark. Dannii Minogue guessed Jimmy Rees, Dave Hughes guessed Simon Baker, Jackie O guessed Zac from Hanson, and Urzila Carlson guessed Brandon Flowers.

Dannii said after the reveal: “How did nobody guess Ben, we were not even close.”

Host Osher Günsberg said “You really threw them with the roses man.”

Lee replied: “That’s because I was in a movie with Rose Byrne called The Rage in Placid Lake.”

“Ooohhhhhh,” the audience and judges replied.

Lee said after the reveal: “I do consider myself somewhat of a mad professor archetype, I think a lot of artists are like that where you’re just tinkering around trying to make magic happen and being eccentric.”

When asked about the appeal of the show, he said: “I like to do anything that makes me feel weird... this is so weird I’m into it. Once you become a parent you do a lot of weird things to entertain your kids.”

He said he was happy not to have been voted out first.

Hughesy said: “My wife is going to lose her mind, she loves you.”

The singer revealed on the show last week as the ‘Duster’ was former MasterChef judge George Calombaris.

And it was certainly an eyebrow-raising casting choice among viewers, given few have forgotten Calombaris’ 2019 scandal about the massive underpayment of workers at his restaurants:

The first contestant on this season’s The Masked Singer was an international film star.

English actor and former professional footballer Vinnie Jones was revealed as the singer inside the Volcano costume, booted out after a rendition of The Proclaimers classic “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”.

Jones, 56, is best known for roles in action films including Gone in 60 Seconds, Snatch and X Men: The Last Stand. Prior to his acting career, he was a defensive midfielder from 1984 to 1999 in various British football teams.
