Truly gross Australian Survivor moment has viewers ‘traumatised’

ONE contestant’s stomach-churning lack of table manners on last night’s episode of Australian Survivor had many viewers reaching for the sick bucket.

Last night the underdog Contenders team won its first reward challenge of the season. The prize: A giant pile of nachos and a generous serve of margaritas.

As with most rewards in Survivor, there was a catch.

The team could not enjoy their meal together as a group — instead, they had to walk to a hut one by one, each person getting time alone with the giant meal. Their teammates would never know how much they ate — and they’d get time to themselves to search for a clue. (Clues are vital in Survivor, and often hidden around reward challenges.)

The first few contestants to enter the hut did as you’d expect, helping themselves to a hearty serve of nachos and a margarita or two while having a thorough scour of the hut for an as-yet-unlocated clue.

Then it was ‘self-made millionaire’ Benji’s turn.

Benji. Dude. We know you’re hungry. But there’s really no excuse for this:

Forgoing a glass for his margarita, he instead sucked the cocktail directly from the tap. Pawing his way through the massive pile of nachos, he shoved fistful after fistful into his mouth — all with his head dangled over the meal so that loose, wet bits of chewed food fell back into the pile — for his two remaining teammates to unwittingly re-eat.

Honestly, the scene needed a trigger warning for anyone who gets grossed out by the sight of people eating.

Still, perhaps there was method to his madness: Benji was the only contestant to find the clue — it was written on the serving board under the nachos, which he found after digging through the food with his bare hands like a dumpster raccoon.

Another moment in last night’s episode had viewers gasping — this time courtesy of host Jonathan LaPaglia.

Commentating a reward challenge that saw each team having to hurl coconuts into a basket held aloft by a member from the opposing team, LaPaglia watched as Steve ‘Commando’ Willis buckled under the weight of the coconuts he was doing his best to hold on to.

“Woah, Steve is taking nut after nut after nut!” LaPaglia exclaimed — a double entendre we really can’t explain on this, a family website.

He was still at it on Twitter while the show aired last night — we see you, LaPaglia.
