PRODUCERS of Nine’s reality talent show The Voice have added a 30-second delay to their live shows to ensure talented teen Adam Ladell can take the stage without added stress.

Ladell, 16, has Tourette’s syndrome — a neurological condition characterised by involuntary vocal and physical tics. He can’t suppress them, but when he opens his mouth and starts singing, the tics subside.

With live shows starting Monday night, producers have moved to introduce a 30-second time delay to ensure they meet their duty of care and protect both Ladell from additional nerves and avoid any vocal tics pre or post-performance going to air in the show’s PG timeslot, TV Tonight reports.

It means he can concentrate on showcasing that glorious voice — something that has seen him progress thorough blind auditions and battles — first under the mentorship of coach Ronan Keating, and now under Delta Goodrem after she used a ‘save’ to keep him in the competition.

Ladell is one of 16 finalists to make the live shows, and is a firm fan favourite.

He has spoken openly about his experience with Tourette’s — of the embarrassment he or others feel in situations when the condition emerges as swearing or inappropriate comments.

“In public, people don’t understand what’s going on,” he told News Corp.

“They can think I’m doing it on purpose or that I’m under the influence on something. That’s always a big stress for me.”

But when he sings ‘I get transported to another world ... I forget everything around me and get lost in the music’.

The condition, which has worsened as he has grown older, is physically exhausting, but he wants to clear up the misconceptions people have about Tourette’s — as well as knocking it out of the park with those vocals.
